A Different Approach:

What Is OMPT:

Within the field of physical therapy, several specialties are based on manual manipulative techniques; only one of these specialties, Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMPT), is a certified therapy recognized by the American Medical Association.

OMPT takes a different approach to patient problems from that of traditional physical therapy. A traditional physical therapist focused on treating a symptom. Often, this works fine. But some problems do not respond to traditional treatment, because the symptom is caused by a problem located elsewhere. This is known as referred pain. Medical literature documents that physical conditions not resolved with traditional physical therapy often respond to OMPT treatment. By utilizing this method of treatment Midland Physical Therapy, Inc. is able to quickly and effectively treat your symptoms at their source.

OMPT is a specialty within the orthopedic physical therapy. In addition to possessing the same fundamental orthopedic knowledge and skills, our trained Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists has undergone extensive, postgraduate clinical and theoretical training. Midland Physical Therapy, Inc. is proud to employ only those physical therapists that have participated and successfully completed a residency and university-based OMPT program.

OMPT training involves a minimum of two years postgraduate education including over 2000 hours of clinical residency and theory. Residency programs in physical therapy are based on the same educational model that has long been used in the education of Medical Doctors - granting our PT's an extensive knowledge of anatomy. Residency education provides direct mentoring in the clinical setting that provides the appropriate patient population, equipment, and supervision.

To keep our patients safe and our clients happy, Midland Physical Therapy, Inc. promotes effective and ethical manual physical therapy in accordance with the guidelines established by the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists and the American Physical Therapy Association.

OMPT training uniquely qualifies our staff to administer symptom localization techniques that specifically identify the tissue, joint or segment that is causing the patient’s symptoms. Symptom localization is based on the OMPT’s advanced integrated knowledge of anatomy, bio-mechanics, and function of the musculoskeletal system. This advanced training allows our therapists to specifically and effectively evaluate and treat all orthopedic problems, including delicate neck and back structures.
